Tandem exists because the people who care for the next generation deserve a model that works for them — and the centers that depend on them deserve one too.

Tandem was started by two Ohio-based women who decided to build a better way.

Olivia is is the CEO of Tandem. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, her background in child care began early—babysitting, running a neighborhood camp, and later creating her own matching system for families and sitters. Those experiences inspired Tandem’s mission to make child care staffing more dependable and accessible through meaningful connections and real community impact.

McKenzie is the Head of Product and Engineering at Tandem. Originally from New Jersey and based in Columbus, OH for the past decade, she brings a lifelong connection to early childhood education through her mom’s 30+ year career in the field. By pairing that perspective with her background in software engineering, McKenzie leads the product vision and development of Tandem’s systems, strengthening and modernizing child care staffing.
Child care is essential, but staffing it has always been the hardest part. Centers were stretched thin, and the people who keep classrooms running didn't have a model that worked for the way they actually want to work.
We exist to understand the child care workforce — their needs, their motivators, what keeps them in the field — and to build a platform that lets them stay in it long term. Shift-based work, daily pay, real flexibility, and the support to make a career out of caring for kids.
In turn, centers get the staffing help they need: vetted, compliant substitutes ready to step into a classroom, on the days they need them. We sit in the middle and handle the rest.
Our work is guided by a commitment to reliable care, respected educators, and stronger child care programs.
Early childhood educators do some of the most important work there is. The communities we serve deserve a staffing model that treats it that way.
Substitutes are professionals, not gig workers. We design around their needs — flexibility, daily pay, respect — so they can build long-term careers in the field.
Every substitute is vetted and compliant before they ever set foot in a classroom. Centers, families, and children are counting on it.
When centers are fully staffed, more children get cared for, more families get served, and the whole community benefits. That's the outcome we're working toward.
Because lasting impact starts with strong systems.
Join the child care centers that trust Tandem to keep their classrooms fully staffed, every day.
