Background Checks

Every Tandem teacher completes a comprehensive background check through the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE).

This includes fingerprinting and state/national checks, with results issued through the ABCMS system. We only accept unexpired, verified Qualification Letters, so centers can feel confident every staff member has been fully cleared.

To safeguard children’s health, every teacher provides verified medical documentation before starting:

1. Staff Medical Assessment signed by a licensed provider

2. Tuberculosis Screening (TB test or chest X-ray clearance)

3. Emergency Medical Care Information Form for rapid response

4. Health Questionnaire to identify any restrictions

Application for Employment

Each teacher must complete a detailed employment application, which aligns with state licensing rules. It includes:

1. 5 years of employment history with no unexplained gaps
2. References and education verification

ITS-SIDS Training

Infant/Toddler Safe Sleep & SIDS Risk Reduction (ITS-SIDS) is mandatory in NC for anyone working with children under 12 months.

Tandem verifies unexpired training completion by a licensed trainer, covering safe sleep environments, positioning, and emergency response.

Teachers have 60 days from starting with Tandem to complete this, and we track expiration dates automatically.

Recognizing and Responding to Suspicions of Child Maltreatment Training

Every Tandem teacher completes NC’s child maltreatment prevention and reporting training. This equips them to:

1. Identify signs of neglect and abuse
2. Follow mandated reporter responsibilities
3. Respond appropriately and protect children’s safety

Required within 90 days of hire, this training ensures that every adult in the classroom is a vigilant protector of children.

Pediatric First Aid/CPR

Emergencies can happen. Every Tandem teacher is certified in pediatric First Aid and CPR, verified by an in-person, licensed trainer. This ensures they can respond confidently to:

1. Choking or breathing emergencies
2. Allergic reactions
3. Basic first aid until EMS arrives

NC requires this training within 90 days of hire, and we keep certifications current and unexpired.

Health & Safety Training

Tandem teachers complete NC’s Health & Safety Training, covering the 11 state-required modules such as:

1. Safe environments & supervision
2. Medication administration
3. Transportation safety
4. Emergency preparedness

Required within 90 days, this ensures every teacher is prepared to keep children safe in daily and unexpected situations.
